Can crowns that are to tight cause discomfort?

by Jmille, Sep 03, 2008 01:19PM
I had a cavity that was under a filling of tooth 14 and I had to have a crown down. I have had this temp crown on for 4 weeks and it is feeling as the tooth is in a vice. The tooth is throbbing and going to the jaw. Now he is saying root canal. I remember when placing on the temp crown that he stated it was so tight that we will have to cut it off if we use permanent cement on it. This was done....! Question is if a crow is too tight can it cause discomfort from the tooth and not let the nerve calm down. Can crowns that are to tight cause discomfort?

A crown can't really be too tight on the tooth.  It can be TOO LARGE for the area and it can push the teeth next to it and create some tightness in the area.  But it sounds like you may have an infection in the area resulting in pain.  If you're not convinced, I guess he could reduce the size of the crown but if you can floss through the area with no problem, its probably not too tight.  If the floss breaks and can't go down at all, then the contact area is too tight.

The kind of pain u r describing...source could not be the tightness of the crown

Great.  Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing from here on out.
