Certain type of teeth whitening best for those with pre-existing sensitivity/receeding gums

I have had sensitive teeth for over a decade now, and I've been using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth for years.  I also have receeding gums that I've already seen a doctor about.  Over the past three years (since my last dentist cleaning), I've developed really bad stains on the edges of my teeth (probably from drinking a cup of coffee per day and eating blueberries for breakfast), so I know I need to have teeth whitening done.

My question is, since I already have a sensitivity problem (and gum recession), is there one type of whitening proceedure that would be better for me and not make my sensitivity problem worse?  Also, is the sensitivity from whitening proceedures a permanent problem?  Thanks in advance.

Usually sensitivity from a whitening procedure does not result in permanent sensitivity.  It may last for a few hours or days depending on the severity.  If you would like to do whitening, contact your dentist about possibly using take-home whitening trays with a mild or moderate strength bleach.  By taking it at home, you can control the amount of time you wear the tray and can see how sensitive they are.  I would initially recommend using it on the lower end and upping the time you keep it on to see how your teeth respond.
