Child with red and sore gums in front

Hi. I have a 4-year-old that recently started complaining that "my lip hurts." Upon investigating, I found that the gums on the bottom front have turned very red. The little flap of tissue that connects from the inside of the lip/mouth on the bottom to the gum is also inflammed and very sore. There arent any ulcers or patches that I can see and he just recently started to complain about 2-3 days ago. My son goes to the dentist regularly, has not had any issues,  and we help him bursh his teeth on a regular basis. The top gums and sides seem fine. He does not have a fever, sore throat, or any rash on his body, hands, or feet. I wonder if somehow we have irritated it with the toothbrush, but he has a soft toothbrush and I dont THINK we have brushed too hard (although that might be a possibility). Anyone have any similar experience or any advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, but yeah his next cleaning is in October. This doesnt seem like gingivitis, and he has no cavities. Actually the gum line near the teeth is less red today. Still the area at bottom lower lip/gum is still very red and sore. Just couldnt make up my mind to see the doc or the dentist.
