Could I have Trieminal Neuralgia?

by doubleo, Jul 22, 2005 12:00AM
I am experiencimg extreme to violent pain that starts in my jaw and radiates to my teeth. The pain is always located on the same side.(right) Now I've had 3 teeth removed on that side almost a year ago,(2 top 1 bottom) but have been on pain meds for another issue till recently. can i have a lasting effect from surgery? i first thought maybe it was a leftover nerve. or even dry socket. But now im not sure. I can see raised tissue where a too th was on that side. is it possible, this has been there all along and because of the meds i was taking i didnt feel it? I took 2 baclofen (a "TN" treatment)earlier before i read up on "TN" and admit im feeling releif finally, this pain comes at night and makes sleeping impossible. please if you have any info, help!!

If you could find a teaching institution that has an oral surgery and oral pathology department you would be better off.  It is very difficult to recommend anything without a thorough examination and x-rays.   Good luck.

I am not Not a DDS or a medical doctor but this is My story somewhat.  Has your doctor tried you on Tegrotol, even a small dose to see if this helps.  Tegrotol seems to be the hallmark med to rule in/rule out a Classic TN entity. Do you have triggers like when brushong your teeth or even touching your lips or face.  Does cold air/wind set off these pains.  TN is usually a quick electrical type pain. There is also Aytipcal TN or Aytpical facial pain.

I did a survey years ago on this and a person had to see an average of 8 doctors before they were correctly diagnose.

I agree if you can also see a Knowledagble Oral surgeon  (I saw one who did not have a clue and pulled perfectly good teeth) I ended up at a Facial Pain Clinic out of state. Good Luck To You.
