Crown Lengthening vs. Extraction

My husband broke off his tooth (#15) and needs a crown lengthening on it.  After that, a crown and then after that a possible root canal.  Instead of all that time, pain and cost, wouldn't it be easier to just have them pull the tooth?  Since it's his very back tooth, how much is that tooth really needed?

The upper back second molars are important both in the chewing and stability of the mouth and the jaw. At times their removal may even lead to TMJ problems. Now, the question is this, what would be best for this tooth. Is there enough tooth structure after crown lengthening? What is the crown to root ratio (the amount of tooth structure sticking out of the gums vs what is in the bone) the shape of the roots and the longevity and the condition of the opposing teeth, bone quality and the bone and gum conditions. Sometimes it is better to have these teeth removed and have an implant placed instead because it will come out to be more practical, more conservative and less costly. But each situation needs a thorough evaluation, not only of this particular tooth, but also the opposing teeth, the neighboring teeth, The Temporomandibular Joint and the general outlook and values that one has for their general dental health.
