Crown decision

by Amylynn269, Jun 19, 2009 07:37PM
My dentist recently recommended I have a crown put in during the drilling process as I was about to get a filling. He said he found more decay and proceeded to use temporary filling and told me to set up an appointment for a crown. This is my first cavity and I'm wondering if a crown is really necessary. For the most part I read crowns are for broken teeth and more often than not they cause permanent pain and discomfort. This doctor is new to me - I previously had seen another doctor at the same practice and told me I had 2 cavities, when I saw this new guy he said I had 3 more and that my wisdom teeth should be removed b/c the skin could cause bacteria.  I was told by my first doctor that I have great oral hygiene so how all these problems arose in 2 weeks is beyond me. Does is sound like I need the crown?

Its hard to say.  I would assume that if the dentist removed the decay and found that it is larger than was expected from looking at it clinically and at the x-rays, then a crown can be a proper treatment for your situation.

If you seriously question the doctor, you can always seek a second opinion or go back to your first doctor.
