Crown vs. Onlay

Crown vs. Onlay

During a root canal the endodontist discovered that I had a "small vertical fracture on mesicl that did not go sub-gingival" - my question is would it matter if I had a onlay or crown?

Could an onlay cause the fracture to worsen vs. the crown protecting the fracture?  Or could the tooth further fracture with a crown as well.

What, in your opinion, is the best way to go - crown or onlay - and why.

Dear prelude0305:
Full coverage crown is the best restoration for endodontically treated tooth, because the occlusal force is supported by more tooth structure. We can not predict if the fracture would extend further down or not. A safe approach is to have a temporary crown serviced for 3-6 months. If temporary crown works well, then proceeds to final restoration.
