DENTAL root planning, and mercury fillings

scaling and root planning needed, it has been suggested to do this in 2 sessions - the entire top and then the entire bottom. I have never heard it being done this way. ALSO I have a lot of mercury fillings (all done at the same time) which probably have contributed to my medical condition (MS) and I would like to limit my exposure to mercury. Is there a way to cover these to preserve the integrity of my teeth and avoid more drilling and mercury exposure?

Yes it is normal. Depending on your degree of difficulty. Usually a Dental Hygienists would plan to do half of your mouth first so you can chew food on one side since your cleaned half could be sore after the procedure. Root plannning is recommended on patients that haven't seen a dentist in years. Also problematic crowns and bridges.
Amalgam has shown to have effect on MS patients but i dont see how it would implicate your Root planning ? In my opinion there is nothing to worry about. Root scaling or Root planning will not implicate your Amalgam fillings.
Good Luck
