Decisions Decisions

.Good morning or evening or day or night or afternoon ladies and gentlemen and hello. My name is Hamed and I am a 16 year old writer, drummer, band manager, mathematics hater and would be lawyer from Sydney Australia. My main message, however, concerns the would be lawyer part. My teeth are monumentally messed and have been so for about 5 or 6 years. My jaws are completely out of line. My upper jaw is to one side compare to my lower jaw, I still have my wisdom teeth, my bottom and top rows of teeth don't meet, the inside of the mouth in between the two sides of the top row of teeth is far too narrow among many other rather large problems. As a result, I have a lisp and slurred speech. You following me so far? Anyway, now I want to be a lawyer. A criminal barrister under NSW law. To be a criminal barrister, you need to make speeches and mind blowing ones at that. My speech doesn't help. My teeth and jaws have to be realigned with braces. Now they can't do this without surgical assisstance. You got me? Here's how it will work. My jaw will be broken on purpose and relocated, braces will be put in, my wisdom teeth will be taken out, an expander will be put in and many more. All in two rounds of major surgery costing about 20,000-25,000 dollars all up. My concerns:

The surgical procedure takes place at any time and because I don't have PRIVATE health insurance, I can't control when that time would be. That means I could possibly miss the HSC (major exams for NSW), which would put my legal career in jeopardy or make it magnificently hard.

The surgical procedure will get rid of my lisp, althought that is not the main objective, but could also give me a droopy lower lip, throat problems, so on. That would make my voice murderously unbearable. My question:

Is the surgery worth it and could it affect my barrister legal career?

I need help making the decision from a medical point of view, from anyone who has had major surgery before, anyone who is a lawyer or a doctor, by any chance?

Hi,
I really don't think any of us can answer your question.  What you have to ask yourself, is what you have now going to affect your legal career if that is your prime goal?

Should you decide to have the surgery, there is a very good chance that everything will turn out fine.  There is really no way to tell.

The only thing you have to answer is are you willing to take the chance that things will be better than they are now and put aside the fear that they won't?

No matter what you decide you will still be a writer, drummer, band manager, and mathematics hater.  But, you will be giving yourself a chance at relieving a dental problem that you feel may affect the career of your choice.

That is a personal decision best left to you, your parents, and your oral surgeon.

GOOD LUCK in whatever you decide and if it makes any difference, your letter speaks well of a wonderful future barrister!

My very best to you,
Gellia
