Do I need a root canal before a crown if tooth is not hurting?

Hi, I have crowns on my front teeth and one has come out. I have been back to the dentist who has put it back, but it keeps coming out again. There is no post. My dentist now tells me that I will need a new crown, but will have to have a root canal done first. I don't understand this because the root is not giving me any pain, it's just that the crown won't stay in. They tell me that they need to put a pin into the root to attach the crown and therefore that is why i need the root canal first. Can you please tell me if you think this procedure is necessary because first of all I have heard it is unpleasant and also it is very expensive. Many thanks, Anita

Root canal is probably not needed if there is no pulpal pathology. There are many factors associated with the retention of a crown.
