thanks again for your feedback! have a great day!
RebeccaP73,
I would give your dentist a call and possibly have a follow-up visit. Can never be too careful.
thank you for your advice, it is greatly appreciated! I just completed my second round of antibiotics. The third packing was removed on Tuesday and the dentist did not ask me to return. The dentist said I would be fine, so I expected the pain to subside. I don't smoke or take oral contraceptives and I have been quite careful with rinsing. The dentist did suggest I use a syringe to clean out the area but I feel that could be knocking out the blod clot, if there is one forming. What are your thoughts? Also, I am taking pain medication but I do not want to do so for an extended period of time. I really appreciate your feedback!
RebeccaP73,
Alveolar osteitis or "dry socket" is pretty intense experience. It takes a bit of time for it to heal.
What did the dentist tell you during the last appointment? What kind of recommendations were given and were you scheduled to return back to change the dressing?
Dry socket is sadly quite slow to heal. It is important to follow recommendations which were given by your dentist. Things which may prolong drysocket and also increase chance of it happening post extraction may include smoking and oral contraceptives (short explanation hormones wreck havoc).
To ease the pain you may want to try taking ibuprofen, which is OTC pain medication. In your case however, as you are prescribing the pain "quite intense" I would again refer to the dentist and ask him to prescribe some type of pain medication. I am also wondering whenever he/she would prescribe you some sort of antibiotic (in dentistry go to antiobiotic is usually amoxicillin).
Lastly you may also try rinsing with salt/water. Do NOT though rinse extensively/really really hard. Do it gently.
Hope this somewhat helps. :)
