Extreme Toothache...please help

by TheVanDams, Apr 01, 2008 10:35PM
I had a cavity fixed two months ago on my top-front tooth.  I heard the dentist tell his assistant he thought he may have hit my nerve while he was drilling.  He had originally said it would be an easy fix, but when i was leaving the office he acted like it would be a temporary fix.

Anyway, it has hurt a little bit ever since the visit--but, only if i tapped the tooth or hit it with my silverware or whatever.

Well, since yesterday it has been a chronic pain.  A chronic SEVERE terrible pain...and i KNOW TEETH PAIN.  (I have bad teeth and only have my middle six teeth left on top, all others have been pulled.)  I have raided my medicine cabinet for old drugs that were prescribed to me by my dentitst.  I have tried Vicodin, Percocets and IBprofrin and NOTHING has helped....not even a little bit. I am rubbing my gums and tooth with a orajel covered qtip and it isnt touching the pain either.

I had called to get into the dentist this morning but he is on vacation.  I made an appointment for next week but there is NO WAY I will make it that long.  I am not sure i will live throughout the night, actually....it hurts THAT bad.

Can someone PLEASE give me a suggestion to get through the night?  I will be calling another dentist in the morning...but i have to live until then.

I forgot, I also took a Naproxen that I found for my back pain, but that didnt help at all either.

Thank you for your suggestions.

You probably need a root canal treatment ASAP.

hey there. i have had really bad pain. i was told that i needed a root canal but my daughter also needs braces. i just cant pay for all that at once  I asked my dentist if there was anything that i could get to help with the pain untill i can come up with the 500$ that they are asking for.
I am unable to sleep at all. i have tried everything at home possible. from breaking asprin and putting it on my tooth to garlic to orajel. what should i do in this case? as far as my dentist not wanting or not willing to give me anything for the pain. i am so frustrated and dont know what to do. i have three little children and they all need me and i am baisically worthless when i am in pain and it seems that the pain increases at night when it is time to rest. please if anyone can help i would appriciate it.

wow this post has been hijacked a bunch of times. from now on everyone please try to make your own post. it is far less confusing. this is a generalized response pick and choose what applies. when teeth hurt they need immediate attention. even if the pain finally disappears there can be serious damage occurring to adjacent teeth and the jawbone. you will not find help from a website you need a dentist now. many dentists accept payment plans or let you apply for care credit to help spread out the cost. also many states have great dental schools that have reduced charges. there are also income based clinics located in most major cities. if none of those ideas are available try local charities and churches. they may not have the resources to pay for a root canal or expensive procedures but might assist with enough aid to pull the teeth that are causing such pain and eliminate infection. if your only issue is fear not cash it is something you have to overcome. the problems will only keep getting worse if not corrected. many dentist can give you a mild tranquilizer before an appointment to make you feel more relaxed. also feel free to bring an ipod. blocking out the noises and closing your eyes really does help reduce fear. i know from experience. the dentist is a lot less scary if you go regularly so struggle through the fear and get back to a clean slate then go every 6 months to avoid having to go thru this whole mess again in a few years. its easier to panic briefly for something small than to wait for major issues.
