Extreme pain after crown

I had a crown put in on Monday (Nov 3) on one of my upper right molars.  I am experiencing extreme deep pain in the tooth and jaw.  I went to the dentist on Tues and he said to give it a few days and gave me some ibuprofen.  It has worked to kill the pain for the most part, but last night I woke up with worse pain than usual.  I took ibuprofen again and it relieved it somewhat.  However, I cannot eat anything that requires chewing without it kicking up the pain again.  I don't know what's considered "normal pain".  I know he said that he did a lot of drilling, so my tooth needs to settle down, but this is more pain than I've ever had with dental work.  I had a root canal 7 years ago, and it wasn't this bad.  Should I go back to him right away, or give it a full week?  I'm worried I could have an infection, but how would I know?

Side note:  This tooth has been extremely sensitive to hot and cold for a couple of years now.  The crown should have made it better I thought, but it's so much worse.

I would go back right away.  Better to be safe than sorry.
