Failed Root Canal - Opinion Needed

I had a root canal done about 4 1/2 years ago on molar #19. I recently started having pain in that area, so I went to the dentist & it turns out I have an infection around the ends of both roots. I had a consultation with an endodontist my dentist referred me to, and he said that the root canal was done really well, so he didn't believe re-doing the root canal would do any good. He suggested an apicoectomy or extraction.About the apicoectomy option - he said that because of the amount of infection, he'd have to cut off about half of one root and a third of the other root. He said that there could be tooth stability problems because of the amount of root being cut off and he estimated that there would be a 30-40% chance that it may not be a success due to lack stability. In that case I'd have to do the extraction anyway.

I wasn't feeling content one opinion so I had a consultation with another endodontist today for a 2nd opinion.  When I told him that the 1st endo thought the root canal was done well, he didn't agree at all (based on the xrays).  I told him that the 1st endo suggested apicoectomy or extraction.  The new endo suggested that older endos may not be as comfortable with the new techniques used to retreat root canals so they often suggest apico or extraction instead.  He told me that the tooth looked ok for retreatment and that he was capable of doing a very thorough job with his knowledge, experience and equipment.  He said he would do it in two visits and he estimated a 85% chance of retreatment success.

This sounds more compelling than the apico or extraction, but what do you think?  I'm confused because I have to different suggestions from 2 different endos.  The endo I saw today is younger (his endodontics degree read 2006) so he doesn't have as much experience as the 1st endo, but is that important?  Should I go back to my regular dentist and discuss everything with her?
