Filling in a crown

Filling in a crown

I have a small pinhole in a gold crown on the top center surface and the dentist has suggested a filling.  Is this ever an acceptable approach?  I have concerns about trapped decay and future leakage around the filling.  The crown is 20 years old but would prefer to salvage it, if possible.

If there is no decay of tooth structure, periodic exam may suffice.

That would depend on the size of the hole, if there is any decay, and the overall condition of the crown.  Gold crowns do last a long time, I have seen up to 35 years.

Will a filling under a crown leak?  Eventually yes, but it might give you some more time before needing to replace the crown.  Just replacing the crown is a good option as well.
