Fixing a new Crown

My dentist recently recommended a replacement for a crown that had been on my tooth for at least 8 yrs (after a root canal).  He did take an impression of the tooth and make crown.  Upon completion, I had pain along my gum line on one side of the molar tooth.  I went to visit him a few days later and he thought it was sore from the novicane shot (although I thought otherwise) and sent me on my way.  

Approximately 5 weeks later while out of town, the permenant crown fell out.  A different dentist temporarily cemented it back in for me and told me it did not fit correctly and that a new crown (and impression) would need to be made.

When I got back in town and visited the dentist that did the work, he claims that he can "Fix" this new crown by sending it back to the lab where they can add more porcelin material where needed (since he claimed food was getting between) and he can refit the new crown by filing it appropriately (since it didn't fit the finish line appropriately)

Will this "Fix" be as good as a new crown?  I am concerned especially since the crown is only 6 weeks old.  I paid good money for it.  Should I insist he makes a new one instead of "Fixing" it?  Please advise.

Its hard for me to tell since I am not able to see you in person.  

I would consider seeking another opinion of a doctor in town prior to the fix if you are concerned about this "fix."  

But anytime there is a problem with the finish line, I would be concern for microleakage.  The cement acts to seal the gap between the crown and the tooth but the smaller the gap, the better the success of the crown.

But if he already sent the crown back to the lab...I dont have the crown to get the second opinion.

Oh, well in that case, you can wait til he cements it in and get a second opinion.  But unfortunately they'll have to cut the crown off to remove it most likely. Another option is to ask him to temporary cement the crown for you while you get a second opinion on the matter.  Its a delicate situation as you don't want to offend your doctor but at the same time, if you aren't completely comfortable with the situation, its probably better to check and make sure since it is your health, not his.
