The only thing that I can tell you is that I have a number of patients that take the medication and I have not seen any problems with it.

After taking Fosomax for several months I noticed a snapping sound with pain in my jaw when I opened my mouth wide to take a bite of a sandwich. I asked my doctor about it and she said TMJ. I also said that I feel pain deep within my ear and she said that would be caused by the TMJ. When I asked her if the Fosomax could be causing the problem she said absolutely not.  She asked if I grind my teeth at night and told me that I may not know that I'm doing it. I really don't think that I am. She said that I could go to a Dentist and have a mouthpiece made to correct it. I remember after leaving, i thought that I should have made her right it down. I'm not sure if she did or not because she didn't seem to think it was a big deal. I stopped taking the Fosomax but I now feel a click with each chew of food. It's annoying, but it also hurts sometimes. I stopped taking the Fosomax a while ago because I trusted my own instincts. Does anyone know if this will continue to get worse?

Today, I attended a lecture at the Florida Dental Association Annual Meeting.  The lecturer has these ititals after the name, MD, DDS, MS.  For you who may wonder what this means, the lecturer is a medical doctor, a dentist and the MS is a masters in periodontology.  The subject was periodontics and systemic disease.     Fosomax is a biophosphonate drug. The biophosphonate drugs have been known to cause osteonecrosis (infection causing loss of bone) of the jaw.  A disease you do not want to get.  The lecturer said she would never recommend anyone taking them.  Having an extraction or even a root canal after taking these drugs can initiate the infection in the bone.
