Frenectomy

Frenectomy

Not quite sure if this is the right forum but I have talked to my dentist about this a long time ago.

I have a moderate attached frenelum beneath the tongue, but I guess not so bad that they took care of it at birth. It is severe enough that I can only stick about 1 cm of  tongue out of my mouth. When I was 10 or so my dentist wanted to clip it but I guess they let me choose not to.

So now I'm 22, and I'd like to have it taken care of. I'm just curious if there is any reason not to: most importantly, might it affect my speech, and are there any other unforeseen side effects?

Probably not.  If anything, it would allow you more mobility to move your tongue to eat, etc.  See if your dentist will use a soft tissue laser instead of a scalpel blade.  I haven't done one personally but I hear from other dentists that the use of a soft tissue laser is much easier and the recovery time is faster.
