GUMS BLACK & SPREADING TO CHEEK...

My boyfriend's (27 years old)wisdom tooth has been bothering him on & off for a long time... now i looked in his mouth & in the back near the wisdom tooth, on the gum is turning gray & black, And spreading to his mouth/cheek area. Can this be a very bad infection or possible mouth cancer.
ANY IDEA WHAT THIS CAN BE???
