Gum swollen and x-ray showing nothing wrong with teeth?

by miche35, Oct 05, 2005 12:00AM
Hello, 5 weeks ago I woke up with severe pain in my bottom right side of mouth. The gums swelled up, so I went to the dentist. There was an abcessed tooth, so the Dentist pulled the tooth. The lump on my gums stayed swollen, so the Dentist took two additional x-rays of my mouth 2 and 3 weeks later and said the other teeth were fine and he wasn't sure what to make of it. He wanted me to wait and see if the swelling resided. Now, I developed a sinus infection and bronchitis (It's going around)A few days into my cold, my cheek swelled up like it did 5 weeks ago, and also developed a cold sore on that side. So I went to a Doctor on Friday, who said I have sinusitis and bronchitis, plus he said my lower right gums were obviously infected to him. He put me on Amoxicillin and told me to contact my dentist on Monday. The Amoxicillin is helping, the swelling on the outside is already gone down, only on the gum itself is swollen. I went in today and the Dentist did a 4th x-ray and examined the mouth. He said there is nothing he can see wrong with the teeth on the x-rays. My teeth are a tiny bit sore. He recommends I finish my Amoxicillin (5 more days) and if it hasn't gone away then I need to probably see a endodontist. Any suggestions? Could this just be the abcess (abscess) from the first tooth not gone yet? Could you have an abcessed tooth and it not show up on the xray? My dentist is not too terribly concerned but I am. Thank you in advance for any advice. Michelle

I am of the opinion that the cause of any swelling should be looked into. I certainly think antibiotics are appropriate but the reason for the swelling should be determined. If one of the teeth is in need of root canal therapy and you have a swelling associated with that tooth then more than likely thereis some evidence on the x-ray. I do not know whether this is an endodontic or periodontic(gum) problem. An oral surgeon may be a doctor that should be consulted. A swelling has a cause and should be investigated.

I had a tooth fixed and crowned on lower right. The crown felt uncomfortable. I thought it would get better. 6 days after the crown was in, my gums are sore. Now there seems to be a sore in the back of my mouth. The sore hurts when water hits it. The right side of my throat is senstive and sore to touch. The whole side of my face is sensitive to touch. I went back to dentist. He said tooth is fine and thinks I have cold or flu. I don't. I am healthy and have no past mouth problems. I have other crowns. Dentist put me on Azithromycin pak 250tab. This is my 3rd day on it. I do not feel that anything has improved. I am frightened and worried. I need help. This is the first time that this dentist has worked on me. I have went to the same office the last several years.
