Its hard to say with your description.  I would say my first instinctive guess would be that its a bad wisdom tooth or an infection of the gums around the wisdom tooth that's causing his swelling.

You should take your boyfriend to his dentist for an evaluation before it gets worse.  Any type of swelling is always cause for concern.  You don't want to swelling to get bigger or spread to other places.
