Impacted Wisdom Tooth

Hello, I have a impacted wisdom tooth on one side on the lower jaw. It is lying on it's side against the other molar.  I have been advised to have it out, I know there is advanced decay in the tooth.  Can you explain the best method of removal. Also should I see a Oral Surgeon or the normal dentist.  I had a deep cavity drilled in the adjacent tooth yrars ago and even with local anasthesia I felt a burning.. Does this mean the wisdom procedure may need more than a local.
Thanks

An impacted wisdom tooth that is mapositioned or lying on its side is best left to an oral surgeon.  The surgeon accesses the tooth through the gums and bone and removes the tooth as atraumatically as possible.  Usually it is neccessary to section the tooth for easy removal.  Whether or not you require more than a local can be discussed with the surgeon, but usually is advised for a more comfortable experience.
