Infection 1 1/2 months post wisdom tooth extraction

My son had all wisdom teeth extracted Aug 31 and the recovery was uneventful.  He followed all instructions and completed antibiotic prescription (I don't remember which one).
Two days ago he c/o soreness on the left side at the back.  Today his left face is quite swollen.  Moderate pain that is resolved with plain tylenol, no fever.  He has been rinsing with salt water and applying ice a few times a day since Friday night.
I am an RN, and am confident it does not warrant a visit to the ER.  I have Ciprofloxacin po 500mg and Amoxicillin (?dose) available.  Should we just continue with the rinses and ice apps or should I start him on one of these antibiotics. I definitely have 12 of the Cipro and do not know at this time how may Amoxicillin are available.
Thank you
Lorraine

I wouldn't recommend doing any self medicating without an examination by the dentist first.  It would be unusual to develop an infection 6 weeks after the extraction.  If you do want to use antibiotics, we would normally prescribe amoxicillin 500mg tid or clindamycin 300mg qid for about a week.  You should go back to the dentist to find out the source of the problem though.
