Is New Impression needed for tooth that Moved

I had # 18, my last molar prepped for a gold crown as it was very painful to chew, had a large old filling,  a sizeable horizontal fracture and was sensitive to both warm and cold.  The next day I had to have a root canal as the tooth was terribly painful. Endodontist did a great job and explained the nerve had gone bad.

I returned to my regular dentist several days after the root canal to get my Temporary put on. He said it was not necessary since the Endodontist had placed a flat layer of cement over his crown prep.  14 days passed before the Gold crown was ready to be cemented.   When he tried to put the crown on, he told me the tooth had moved laterally and this had created  a gap for food to get stuck between #18 and the molar next to it.  So he returned the crown to the lab to add some gold to improve the 'contacts' or close the gap at the base of the two molars.

Should he have taken a new impression of #18 since the tooth had moved?  Is it customary to send the original crown with original impression back to the lab and request more gold be added to fix the contacts?   I've spent $2600 on this one tooth in cash between the root canal and crown and don't want some mediocre crown cemented on.  One of the senior partners asked me if he had taken a new impression after he realized the tooth had moved and I said "No, he didn't".  The partner made no comment.  I  don't know if I should be concerned because I want this gold crown to be properly fitted but I don't know enough about dentistry to know if what he is doing is acceptable or if he's just taking short cuts.    If I should say or do something, what would I do?

My personal opinion is that a new impression should be taken but for a different reason.  After the root canal was done, with the hole made to get to the canals, it would change the shape of the tooth and I would say at that point, it would be ideal to take a new impression of the new shape of the tooth.  If at that point the crown had a problem with a contact, I would be okay with sending it to the lab for a minor adjustment to fix the contact.

Hi, If the initial fit of the crown was not proper then dentist should take a fresh impression for better results as any add-on of gold can not be possible without getting the original crown distorted  which may rather create more trouble in the fit. In such cases, ideally a new impression will work the best but it has very minor adjustments then your doctor may either adjust chair-side or may send the crown with the cast to the lab.

Thank you both so very much for responding to my dental quandry.  I have placed a phone call to my dentist as he is supposed to Permanently Cement on the Original crown (prior to root canal and tooth shifting laterally) today!!

I will politely explain that since the tooth has undergone a root canal AND has shifted laterally since his original Impression and therefore I would feel more comfortable for him to take a new impression of #18, and make a new gold crown from that New impression.

I will also offer to pay him for his time or the Lab for this.  As I have paid $2700.00 on saving & restoring  #18, I would like the Gold crown to be as perfect as possible and last as long as possible.  If he refuses, I will request a refund and go elsewhere.

I don't know how else to handle this. My husband, a physcian, is adamant that the crown be properly made and fitted, especially since the only impression was taken BEFORE the root canal and BEFORE the tooth moved.  This dentist simply wants to add on gold to make the contacts tighter and cement it on!   The fact that his Senior partner asked me "Did he take new impressions after the root canal & shift ?" makes a statement.

Thanks Drs.
