Is a crown the only option?

Is a crown the only option?

I had a root canal and inlay done a few years ago.  (upper left side, furthest tooth back, NOT wisdom)  My current dentist (who did not perform the root canal/inlay) informed me that my inlay is now cracked and decay is starting underneath.  He told me I would need a crown. Seeing that I just spent $1500 on an implant, my dental coverage is obsolete and was hoping to push off new treatment until the new year.  Well, the inlay just fell out and I need to do something to fix it.....is a crown the only option?  the best option?  Is there a cheaper solution?
