Is it really necessary

Is it really necessary

I have been told recently that I need a filling. I have never had one before and I am not scared, just the thought that my teeth are no longer perfect is causing me some upset but I wonder if it is really necessary. The tooth the dentist is talking about looks (to me) whole and with no hole or obvious wearing of the enamel. All that can be seen is a small blue spot which has been there for about 5 years (and the dentist has never said anything before despite regular checkup's every 6 months). There is no pain and the spot has not changed size or shape in that time. They took an xray which to me did not show anything huge, perhaps a very small dark line but it was almost invisible and he was telling me about a cavity in the dentine which needed filling and was saying there were two more which might need doing later because there was something in the enamel (again I couldn't see anything).
I am not happy about needing this but will go with it but now I am worried because the spot is near the edge of the tooth and I worry if he fills it that it will be more likely to crack and then i will have to have it removed which would be even worse than a filling.
I don't know what to do, I allowed the surgery to book me in for a filling but I just so don't want it, just thinking about having to have it make me cry and I can't get past that feeling of failing to keep my teeth good. I feel guilty and scared.
Please advise me

From someone who has had a bad dental history and not because of bad dental care but bad genes; I can tell you to A.) If you are questioning the dentists findings go get a 2nd opinion. or B.) Get the fillings done because the longer you wait the worse the cavity gets. Once the cavity reaches a certain point a root canal will be necessary and that is a true guilty feeling. Do not feel bad for having a cavity. You could be perfect with your dental up keep but still require a filling every now and then. Just do what needs to be done now to save yourself the money, time and possible pain. Best of luck with your teeth. Hope I could help!

Thanks for the response. I was feeling bad because I had always tried to take good care of my teeth with twice daily brushing and using mouth wash and flossing etc and I suppose getting that news just made me think what's the point, no matter what I do it's not good enough and I had images of looking in the mirror one day and just being faced with a mouth full of black stumps - not a nice thought!
Thankfully a friend said something that cheered me up "It's life, I have fillings in most of my teeth and it doesn't matter because it's better than dentures"

Now I just need to convince work to let me have time off to get the treatment.
