Is this sore spot cause for alarm?

I am a long-term, light smoker who recently quit. Yesterday I noticed a very small white spot on the side of my tongue. It looks like pappilae that are somewhat raise from the surface of the tongue. I don't have any swelling of the tongue but it the spot dose occasionally interfere with speech as the area is sensitive to touch and hurts when making contact with my teeth. I applied pressure to the area using my thumb and forefinger and detected no noticeable mass. I have no fever or weight loss and yet I can't stop worrying that this might be oral cancer. Would oral cancer present itself in such a way? Thank you
