Jaw Pain and Wisdom Teeth

by maryjz, Jun 27, 2009 04:36PM
About two weeks ago, my neck and jaw began to ache so I went to an oral surgeon where I was told i had developed perocoronitis by my wisdom tooth.  The doctor put me on antibiotics and took my top two teeth out the very next morning.  I had only a local and did not need stitches. He told me I would be feeling much better by the next day.  He did not prescribe me any painkillers, but told me to take ibuprofen.  It has now been 5 days since the extraction, and my jaw is still sore on the same side as i had had the perocoronitis. It hurts especially when I open my mouth.  Should i still be in pain?  The doctor made it sound as though i would be fine in 48 hours but is it possible that the jaw is just sore for awhile because of the extraction?

You may be sore for a week or more.  The soreness should gradually improve each day.  The soreness may come from the extraction site or it may be the muscles are sore/traumatized from the extractions, especially if you were open wide for awhile.  You can go back to your oral surgeon to have it checked out.  Meanwhile, try to ice your cheeks and massage/stretch it out a little bit to see if that helps.
