Jaw pain after wisdom teeth removal

Jaw pain after wisdom teeth removal

My daughter, age 23, had all four wisdom teeth removed a year ago. She has a very small mouth, so she had a lot of pain after. Ever since then she is waking up with pretty bad jaw pain. She's not grinding her teeth during the night, but thinks she is clenching them. The dentist wants to fit her with a mouth guard-$700.00. Should she see a TMJ specialist first, try the mouth guard or go back to the oral surgeon? She did use a cheaper mouth guard last night & said her mouth really hurts today. She is not having headaches from it or neck pain.
Thanks in advance.

I would wait for the area to heal up a little first before making a nightguard.  If she is clenching at night, usually the nightguard will help with clenching as it prevents the teeth from touching and sometimes even reminds the body not to clench.

You can ask the oral surgeon for his/her opinion on the nightguard.
