Lump in mouth enlarged tonsil and persistant sore throats

by sarahandamelie, Oct 23, 2009 04:14PM
Hi
I am a 25 yr old female. About 3 years ago my right tonsil became red and enlarged. During this period I was a heavy drinker and smoker. Quit smoking recently and am taking nicotinell lozenges. Had it checked by doctor told nothing to worry about and given antibiotics which had no effect as it is still red and enlarged. A year later I developed a painless bump in the roof of my mouth (same side) looks like a small ulcer. Saw doctor again and told not to worry. More antibiotics. At this time I became pregnant with my daughter and assumed it might be hormone related. I fell pregnant again soon after she was born and toward the end of this pregnancy started to have persistent sore throat. Now my son is five months old and I feel like I have a lump in my throat the area around my tonsils and sometimes my ear are sore and a few times in the last few weeks I have become short of breath. At one time my breathing sounded like sucking a nearly empty drink through a straw but cleared up in a couple of days. I also feel some nausia and when I'm stressed out it feels like I'm being strangled. Cancer is my biggest phobia. I've been terrified of it since my mum had breast cancer. I keep going back to doctor and keep being given antibiotics and told cancer is very rare at my age and feeling really stupid but I'm so scared I cant sleep at night. I cant focus when I'm with my kids. Its ruining my life its all I can think about. I'm in constant state of panic inside. Today I have started another course of antibiotics (3rd in 5 months) and noticed that the bump on the roof of my mouth is not pertruding any more but has larger surface area. Can anyone tell me if it was cancerous would I still be standing 2-3 years later? Or if its likely? Or if theres any other explanation?  I should mention I had tooth extraction 2 weeks ago as tooth had chipped away and area had become infected also on right side of mouth. I'm so messed up and I can't seem to get doctor to take it seriously.

I definitely can understand your concern as the situation hasn't improve any with the antibiotics.  I would schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon or an ear, nose, throat specialist (ENT) to get it checked out.  They may need to do a biopsy to see under a microscope what is going on.
