Mouth Guard Mold Fitting Damaged Tooth/Gum

Has anyone every had a tooth or gum damaged when they were having a mouth guard mold made?

I went into my dentist about 2 1/2 weeks ago for a cleaning and a mouth guard fitting. The dental assistant puts a metal tray in your mouth filled with a putty-like substance that "sets up" and then she pulls the tray out of your mouth.
When she was finished with my lower teeth, and she pulled the tray out of my mouth I felt an immediately sharp pain - I almost grabbed her arm to stop her, but I was too late. I had some pain that afternoon in the tooth, and then that night I had such pain I was almost screaming.
I went back in to the dentist the next morning almost hysterical with pain, and he would not admit that his assistant had caused the pain. He said I probably had a crack in the tooth before she took the mold. (Not true)

There was blood around the edge of my tooth that has not been there before she made the mold, plus I had had NO PROBLEMS with that tooth for years despite the fact it was a tooth with a root canal and it is in my lower left jaw where I had had nerve damage about two years ago.

I have spent two weeks in pain. The dentist says once I get my mouth guard fitted properly I may not have the pain. Hardly. This is not pain from lack of a mouth guard. Either the metal tray cut my gum or cracked my tooth - I have to go see an oral surgeon next Tues. meantime I am on pain pills to get thru the day and to sleep at night.

What can I do? An x-ray was taken but didnt show anything except what might have been a crack.

I do not believe the dental assistant did this mean spiritedly nor do I think there was deliberate negligence. But it would have been nice for the dentist to admit they caused the problem and then pay for any work done on that tooth thereafter.

What can I do?

Thanks,

Your descriptions suggest that soft tissues were traumatized by alginate impression procedure. Soft tissue tends to heal without consequence in 10- 14 days. Hard tissue traumatized by impression procedure is an unlikely event.
