Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous Oxide?

Hi everyone! I went to oral surgeon this morning regarding the extraction of my 19th tooth.(left lower molar). I had root canal and crown done 2 years ago on that tooth, and it got infected due to tooth breaking under the crown(no idea how) To make long story short, this oral surgeon offered me 2 options. 1. General anesthesia Versed/Propofol
2. Local-Nitrous oxide.  I'm really not comfortable with either one. I think it will make me paranoid and I will freak out there.  I remember last time I had my tooth extracted, I just got Lidocaine and that was it.  What are my other options? The doctor said it would be more complicated than just a regular extraction where you spread the gums and just pop it out. He said he would have to scrape the bone a little to clean it.  Bottom line I don't want either general or Nitrous. Help!!!!

Hi there.
this situation can be dealt with by local anesthesia like lidocaine. since it is (the procedure) not time consuming and the area is readily accessible.

Nitrous oxide could be used if you are anxious about the procedure, it is to deal with your anxiety, nothing more.

I don't recommend General anesthesia, since the case is not inquiring.

If I were you, I would go for local anesthesia alone. but as I said, if you are afraid of doing it, you may choose nitrous oxide.
Wish you all the best

Hi,
Nitrous oxide is really wonderful for extractions.  You won't freak out.  It just makes you very relaxed and the extraction can go so much easier.

I had my top four front teeth removed and had implants placed, all with just novocaine and nitrous oxide. I was very nervous about the whole thing.  The NO just made me feel relaxed and the procedure was quick and totally painless.  I didn't feel a thing and could hear the oral surgeon speaking to his assistant.  You don't really go to sleep with it and are always in control of yourself.

Totally waking up is a breeze, too.  A little oxygen and all the nitrous is gone from your system.  I was able to go home, fix dinner and have a relaxing evening.

I highly recommend it for the anxiety that dental work often causes.  If you feel confident with just novocaine, adding a little bit of NO will only make it so much easier.

Please give it a try.  I don't think you will regret it.

My best to you and let us know how you do.  We love a success story!

Thanks guys, I talked to my doctor again  and decided to go for a combination of Novocaine, Valium po and lortab. I'm familiar with benzodiazepins and feel comfortable with that. You know what is funny is that I'm an RN and see all types off procedures on daily basis, but when it comes to being a patient myself I just freak out when I see tiny needle! LOL
