One corner side of gum swollen after Crown

by hellomms, Apr 19, 2009 10:35AM
I got crown on my molar about 2 weeks ago and then the food started to get stuck between my tooth and the crown.  I used to take it out with floss but that started to hurt a little.  Now that one side of the gum (the outer side of the gum between tooth and the crown) remains swollen and hurts when I eat food - I guess the food gets in between and hurts.

My dentist is on vacation for a week, any idea whats wrong here and what could possibly be the solution?

If you don't want to experience what I went through, I'd find out what the problem is asap.
I have been through hell with two crowns, 18 and 19 molars.

I wouldn't want to see anyone go through with what I have gone through because of hyper occlusion.

Maybe the crown is not seated right?   The dentist on here are great who answer your questions.  I am on my way to recovery because of Scottma.(Jerome)

Doesn't he have someone who backs him up when out ?

I had the crown paining me while the Prosthodontist was on vacation. (that is a specialist in restorative that does crowns and other Prosthetics)  The general dentist at his group helped me out tremendously.

I wouldn't have been in so much pain now had the general dentist I went to back in June Bertolini made my occlusal adjustment right the first time. He kept telling me nothing was wrong even though my crown felt bulky and too high and loose or moving.  The orignal denstist stated for 6 months nothing was wrong.

Well I was desparately in pain.  Had I not been so dumb and naive I would have had the crown taken off the day it started hurting me. He adjusted it 3 times and it never seemed to work.   I finally found this site and Scottma explained to me what a Prosthodontist was.   I didn't think I would need a root canal after the adjustments from the Prosthodontist,  but ended up with two in each tooth.

I would definitely be finding out the cause if I were you. Do not let it go!
Oh did you have a root canal on that tooth?   Maybe it just needs a root canal.

Sometimes after work has been done on a tooth and crowned some people end up having to get root canals. But everyone's situation is different.

Like Mine.    I wouldn't be in pain right now trying to get occlusal adjustments right if it hadn't been for my occlusal trauma.

I am going to a very good prosthodontist, but beause my gums are still so sore and irritated I think it is hard to get the occlusal right.  He has to keep making adjustments while my gum tissue and bruising from the occlusal trauma are healing.

Not to mention symptoms from my root canal slowly healing because of the previous trauma also from the hyper occlusion.

I though every dentist had to have a back up while they were on vacation?  I could be wrong though.
good luck.

Thanks for the detailed message.  Appreciate your concern.

He has a small practice and there is no one else to cover him, his phone does get directed to him so I will call him tomorrow morning.

UPDATE:  Soon after today's dinner I started flossing and it started to hurt, I started flossing and then a small piece of something came out, it was thin and easily broken through the pressure of my finger but it was a bit hard.  I am guess it was a cement.

Hoping that this was what was causing the irritation but now having some itchiness on my gums, no pain though.  Really hoping that it goes to normal, but will call the dentist tomorrow anyway.

Seeing a periodontist to evaluate crown contour and marginal fitness is advised.
