Oral Surgery for embedded root tip/bad infection

by gator19, Aug 15, 2005 12:00AM
Just over two weeks ago,  I accidentally got hit in the face and my tooth split in half.
It is third from the middle at the bottom left of my mouth.  Anyway,  I was on vacation so went to an emergency dentist and he removed what I thought was all of the tooth. He did not tell me that he had left some behind.
I thought everything was okay after that but just 3 or 4 days later, I was in alot of pain and went back. The same dentist went back in and after some considerable swearing, a laceration under my tongue and being told to wipe the blood off my face afterwards,  he removed what he said was all he could do.   He had to put in stitches to stop the bleeding.  Anyway,  he told me that there was a small root tip left but he wasn't going to go after it as it would probably come out by itself anyway.   Well,  after returning home,  I was still in considerable pain and saw my own dentist who was furious that a root tip had been left.  The x-ray revealed that it was so embedded that there was no way it would come out by itself.     However, because I had such a bad infection that the first round of antibiotics (prescribed by the emergency dentist) did not address,  he couldn't touch it and prescribed Metronidazole 250 mg.   Well, I have been on that for 5 days and am still in alot of pain.  To make matters worse, I suddenly spiked a very high fever tonight - 102, and have been sick and vomiting all day.  Is it possible that the root tip is causing the infection to become worse and not respond to antibiotics ?
Any suggestions ?

I don't know if the fever is related to the root tip. I guess is that it is not. I would suggest that you see an oral surgeon as soon as you can.
