Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Periodontist?

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Periodontist?

I had a rootcanal and crown placed on #30 molar several years ago. This year a new dentist in a new city noticed that the previous restoration was poorly done, allowing my tooth to become reinfected.

I had a root canal retreatment done by an endodontist a few weeks ago and it went great (my dentist offered to do it but I researched and found a well-respected specialist in my area). When I returned to my General Dentist and he removed the crown to begin the post and core build-up, he saw that because of the placement of the previous break in the tooth and faulty dental work, I required a clinical crown lengthening.

I want to do things right this time to make sure that this restoration has the best possible chance of lasting for many many many years to come, so I'm happy to have the crown lengthening procedure done.

The only concern I have is that my dentist referred me to an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon friend of his (well respected and makes the list of top oral surgeons in the DC area). I met with him, he outlined the complications of my case (because of the previous reconstruction, there is some pocketing and he would prefer to reposition the gingiva than remove it) and we scheduled an appointment. He seemed to know what he was talking about.

I am wondering, though, given the complexity of the case, if I would be better off seeing a periodontist wrather than an oral surgeon? Is the training significantly different or are both equipped to manage this kind of case?

Thanks!

I would say either is fine.  Even a general dentist can do a crown lengthening procedure if trained.  I would say if you wanted to decide, you could ask how many crown lengthening procedures were done by that particular doctor.  Where they got their training, etc but there's no real way to know who'll be better.
