Oral thrush not going away

Hi Doctor,

I was prescribed antibiotics in november 2010. Soon after, I developed a yellowish/whitish coating on my tongue. I went to see a demonologist and was told it was oral thursh (I have not had this before). I was prescribed various mouthwashes and they did not work. I was then prescribed Nystatin oral suspension (3 bottles) and using it helped, but it did not completely clear the thrush. I went to my GP and he then prescribed Fluconazole tablets for me (50mg for 22 days). This has not cleared the thrush either.

Up till now, my thrush is still not cleared (since november 2010). I am afraid that it might have become very resistant to medication. Could you please advise me on what to do? Are there any other medications that I can take? Or should ask my GP to increase the dosage of the Fluconazole?

In any case, here is what my tongue looks like:

Thank you!

Hi doctor,

Yes, I do brush properly, and i also try to remove the whitish/yellowish coating every now and then. I am currently not on any antibiotics, nor other medications.

I had been using Nystatin for about 60 days and it did not cure it. I did talk to my doctor about a weekened immune system, but he said i'm healthy.

My doctor actually gave me more Fluconazole tablets, but told me to stop all forms of medication after this round as he said it should go away by itself.

What alarms me is that it has been almost a year, but the thrush has not gone away. I've read that thrush can develop resistance to medications. Since i've had it for so long, do you think the thrush has grown resistant? Should I increase the dosages of nystatin/fluconazole?

Thank you.

Have you been brushing properly and brushing your tongue gently?  Also, are you taking any antibiotics currently or any other medications?

You may want to use the nystatin oral suspension again since that seemed to work and use it for a longer period of time.  Thrush can be a side effect of antibiotics but usually anti-fungals will resolve the issue.

Have you been checked to make sure there's no underlying problem that's causing the thrush that may be overlooked such as a weakened immune system?
