Pain After Periodontal Work

Pain After Periodontal Work

I had periodontal scaling recently.  Half of it was done last week and the other half this week.  Starting about the 5th day after the first side was done I started having pain on that side.  I went back to the dentist for the other half, they looked at the painful side, checked the teeth, checked the x-rays, they said there was no sign of infection and that I should use OTC medication to help.

Now, a few days later this pain on the original side is not getting better.  There is no redness or swelling.  Can anyone tell me if this is normal?  This side, by the way, had the deeper pockets, a few were 5 on the scale.

Thanks,
Pam

It may take a few more days to heal up.  I would give it some more time to evaluate the situation.  Has it improved the last couple of days?

Thanks for answering.  The pain is odd, it is not just in the teeth gum area.  Sometimes it is there and sometimes it is gone but when I sit it seems to occur and when I stand up it will dissipate.  I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with my jaw but i have no idea what since I've never had anything like this.  Is it possible to hit a nerve when doing the periodontal work?

When the pain turns on it is pretty bad.  It permeates the whole right side of my face and even pain in my lips as well as strong pain along my teeth and gums.

Last night I was able to lay down and sleep but the night before I couldn't even lay down without it hurting bad.

Is it the top or bottom jaw area that's hurting?  Sometimes when we get pain when moving our heads, I'm thinking a possible sinus problem with the fluids building up in the sinus and moving around in there, causing the pain.  It could be a muscle or nerve injury but I'm not sure about that at this point.
