Pain in tooth after root canal

Hello

I had a root canal 6 months ago.  A week after the procedure I was still having tooth pain.  Canal was done due to sensitivity, I had no infection.  At any rate tooth is still sensitive to hot and cold.  I went in to the endo who did the procedure and he touchd the tooth with cold and at the time in his office I did not feel much pain, but at the right angle on the back of this tooth, I will feel cold and its a sharp pain.  Just to reassure myself I took a tooth pick and touched up along the top of this tooth around the gum line where the crown meets the gum.  I feel pain when I touch the top of that tooth where some exposed dentin is.  

I am at a loss.  My doctor said its not his root canal.  But my tooth still hurts.  I am certain its not other teeth feeling the pain. He said it would be very rare to have another canal in that tooth and I would be a textbook case if this was the reason.  So I dont know what to do. i still feel pressure when I bite or tap on the tooth. HELP

The two things that come to mind is one that there is possibly an accessory canal or another canal present. Secondly, there might be a fracture in the tooth somewhere that would account for the sensitivity to pressure. Either way it might be time to get another opinion. Reading this a second time it sounds more like a fractured tooth. Was there any thought about placing a temporary crown and see if there is any improvement.

I wanted to add, the tooth has not felt any better since the procedure.  I had it done because I was having sensetivity in the tooth with no real known cause.  My dentist thought a nerve was dying and suggested the RC.  Had the RC and still to this day tooth still hurts some days worse then others.
When my dentist put the permanent crown on, I noticed when he blew cold air on it it hurt.  He said if the nerve was still partially alive it would die soon.  Well I dont think it has.  I dont know wht the next step would be.  Endodontist seems to think his work is good and its just me.  Dentist does not know what to think he just feels very bad for me that it still hurts.  I am not a complainer ever but tooth pain is just horrible to live with it ruins your life.  Especially after paying near $1500 for the crown and RC i was hoping to be pain free.

When he put the permanent crown on he asked me if I wanted to wait and go back to the Endo, but he said he felt if it was a living root it would eventually die so I opted to have the crown put on.

I see an endo tomorrow and will show exactly where im feeling the pain.  I hate to be a bother to people but boy when it hurts it hurts.

I wonder how do they get into the crown can it be drilled through? I hear it cannot be removed.

G'day everyone! A possible accessory canal would be present or a microscopical fracture in the tooth is present are both correct! Have you guys also considered that the permanent crown is high occlusally. When crown is high, everytime you bite or chew, even if RCT has been done, you're traumatizing the bone inside. Which you will feel pressure. Most often, the tooth in contact to it will be traumatized and feel painful or sensitive. Go back to your general dentist and have the crown trimmed down a bit

Realizing it's been a few months since the post about the pain after root canal, I do hope to hear back as to how your procedure went after seeing the endo.  I have the very same problem you are having.  I had root canals in two teeth, one right above the other.  Then, at the dentist's insistence, I had crowns put on these teeth.  It seems as though the pain actually started after having crowns put on.  Now, both of these teeth hurt, but especially the upper.  It hurts to bite down on food and it is sensitive to heat and cold.  I am seeing a new dentist now, and he suggests I see an endodontist, giving me the same story you apparently got, that perhaps there is another canal in the tooth, or a fracture.
