Painful inner lip bite

Last week whilst eating dinner I accidently bit the inside of my bottom lip.It was very painful, then I bit it again and again, I became scared to eat for fear of biting a chunk of my lip off.It seemed to have settled a few days later then today I did it again,I admit to talking whilst eating also I am a bit stressed lately.Ive read forums about this some say go a dentist others say eat soft liquid foods a while.Any advice?anything I should do to the bite area?salt water wash?Today I was talking to a friend I had here for dinner when I bit down hard on that spot and flared it all up again,Ive bitten it 2 times more since dinner.A few in another forum wrote lip biting can cause cancer??is that true?

I was very concerned when I too starting biting the inside of my lower l
ip, especially when it developed into a white bump--the dreaded word CANCER came to mind until I saw my dentist and he explained that it was a small gland that got enlarged from me biting it in the same area.  He suggested to just leave it alone.  My problem is that I have a cross-bite and my teeth have moved making it more of a problem recently for me.  Nothing I can do except try to be more careful.

It gets so bad for me I can't really chew gum anymore.  I am more likely to bit my lip when I eat cereal too.  I definitely have to be more conscious how when i chew..much slower! It is really annoying..

I am experiencing the misery of the exact same thing. Eat slowly, small bites, leave the area alone and chew on the other side. Bets to you.

Hi,
Don't worry about cancer.  I am really sorry you keep rebiting the area though.
I understand because I have a habit of doing the same thing.  :(

Really the only thing you can do is not bite it.  Simple, right?  No, not so simple.  It does take a concerted effort to slow down your eating.  Try the soft food for a few days, and DON'T talk while you're eating.  Slow down and try to enjoy the food.  Stressing out is one of the reasons you forget and will rebit it over again.  That the area has a tendency to swell slightly only makes it worse.

I feel for you.  Because I do the same thing, the only way to stop is be carefully paying attention to yourself while you eat.  It will heal.  Rinsing with warm salt water (1/4tsp in 8oz) will ease it and help reduce any swelling.  That should help with the biting also.

GOOD LUCK.  I hope it heals quickly.  Have your teeth shifted at all?  I bit because one of my bottom teeth are squeezed and one sticks out a bit.  I catch the area between my upper and lower crooked tooth.  Very painful.
Maybe a check with your dentist to see if there is any shifting would be warranted also.

My very best to you,
Gellia
