Poor Workmanship - Dental Crowns

I recently had 2 crowns installed.  I had root canal therapy on my lower tooth.  My upper tooth had an old and large filling and the tooth was hurting while chewing (while he was drilling the tooth down, the back half cracked off).  I had 2 crowns installed.

The fit is TERRIBLE (I'm going back for an adjustment today).  I expressed to him that the bite was off, but he's always in a huge rush (I'm working to find a new dentist now).  Additionally, I told him that the upper tooth was extremely sensitive to hot & cold BEFORE he put on the crown.  He still did not check the filling (said the X-rays were fine).  My upper tooth is still VERY sensitive.  I feel as though there may be additional decay on this older filling that wasn't visible in the X-ray.  Is this possible?  I feel that it was a mistake that he didn't at least put a new filling in before putting the crown on, seeing that a crown is supposed to be a more permanent solution than a filling.

I'm going to see another dentist in the dental practice, b/c I feel as though I have been charged $1800 for poor quality work, and I think I deserve to have the work repaired for free, or be reimbursed for the shoddy work that was done.  What are my rights?  Do you think this dentist acted in an appropriate manner?  Thoughts?

I appreciate any insight you might have!  Thanks.

Sounds logical, you had a large deep fill with painful bite.Underlying must have been a crack.Hence the pain when you bite down.A crown was without a doubt the best approach.I have seen cusps break off while preparing because there was a crack. We put crowns on because structurally it is comprimised.Alot of missing enamel, cracks, painful bite, and you had all three. The crown helps to displace forces.
A tooth can be highly sensitive after work is done.It kinda stirs it up,sometimes.we hope it will go away on it's own but it may settle,or again it may not.Careful monitoring is needed.Bite is another issue.Bite does not typically settle on it's own.If the bite is high it will just be plain and simple sore.Once it is sore all you have to do is place any pressure on it.Have him/her recheck you bite, and ask for an adjustment.
Long term if there is damage underlying then if you were to need a root canal at a future date your crown is not a lose.It can be drilled into on top and filled with composite(white) material. We do other things to look for decay besides exrays. You may remember during proceedure a scraping sound with his instrument? We clean across it.It sounds different, and feels different when there is decay.Sometimes a stain is painted in also and it remains after rinsed on the decay. We then clean that out andscrap again.Decay often appears on exrays as a shadow. He most likely refferred to that during procedure and had benefit of loops(magnifing glasses).
If you aren't happy with your dentist you should check with the partner. It will help you to feel better about the work and perhaps make you a bit more comfortable.Do contact your dentist if you have pain that wakes you in the night,or a pimple next to the tissue.
I hope I was able to help some.
