Porcelain or Gold Crown

by jeff101662, May 07, 2009 01:13PM
I just got a temporary crown on one of my front teeth, one over from center left on the top. I need the tooth for my smile. The dentist is trying to get me to put the most expensive crown, totally porcelain. It costs $700 for my part. My other option is a porcelain crown with gold and metal base inside for $422.00. I can only afford the less expensive one. How bad is the gold base one? The dentist says that my gum will receed from the crown and it might not look great. They also showed me example teeth that looked more yellow compared to the more white 'all porcelain'. It feels like they are trying to upsell me on something that I can't afford. How bad is it really? I need to know before I make a decision to possibly beg someone for more money.

The all porcelain crown is probably a better esthetic crown than the porelain fused to gold crown but there isn't a major cosmetic concern depending on your smile and the health of your gums.  If your smile doesn't show the edge of the gums where the crown meets, it most likely won't be an issue at this point.  You might want to ask this question in the cosmetic dentistry section or the comprehensive dentistry section to seek opinions of other dentists on medhelp.org
