Porous enamal and sensitivity

by ForestAnimal, Jan 28, 2009 08:51PM
I got braces when I was a kid. My dentist told me that my orthodontist mixed the cement too strongly, and as a result, my teeth are partially "de-calcified" and porous. This makes them very sensitive. I have been dealing with this for years, and Sensodyne toothpaste is of no help at all (even ProNamel). I need something to rebuild my enamel, but all I can find is toothpaste for enamel hardening/rebuilding + whitening. It seems like every toothpaste has whitening in there somewhere, and if it doesn't say it on the front, I find it listed in the ingredients. My dentist said whitening products will make my teeth worse, and not to use toothpaste that has it. What can I use besides Baking Soda (need to rebuild enamel)? I also have been grinding my teeth at night since I was a little kid, and I'm literally down to the dentin on my last molars. I am a very sensitive sleeper and can't go to sleep with a retainer. My teeth are very sensitive and it just keeps getting worse. I can't even eat more than a bite of cheesecake because it's so painful. I've given up most sweets and all of my drinks/food has to be near room temperature or it hurts. Does anyone know of anything I can do or products I can try that doesn't have whitening... and any other recommendations? Thanks.

Unfortuantly, enamel does not grow back.  The cells that created the enamel die when your tooth erupts from your gums.  What the toothpaste and fluorides do is help strengthen the enamel you still have, but once its gone, its gone for good.

If Sensodyne and ProNamel do not help, there is not much else available to my knowledge.

The only suggestion I have is to have your remaining teeth capped, which will help insulate them.  This amount of work should only be done by a Prosthedontist as it requires a lot of planning above and beyond what most dentists are taught.  The main downside is cost.

A last resort option would be remove the teeth and get implant retained dentures.  I would only do this if the pain is running your life.

Sorry I don't have any better recommendations for you.
