Post crown placement pain

I had four porcelain crowns more than a month ago. In the last 24 hours I have gone from being pain free to being unable to eat on that side. The pain is isolated on to one tooth(with a crown)and it seems to minimize when I pinch it and apply downward pressure. I also have a bite guard that I sleep with. As if I’m not having enough fun....I’m leaving for vacation in a few days. Could this be because of minor shifting caused by the night guard or- am I better off trying to get and emergency root canal? I don’t have a regular dentist right now. Mine did a root canal and left a part of a broken tool in the root that he didn’t remove. Did I mention that he didn’t tell me?

Hi,
It might be in your best interest to get a quick xray of the tooth that's bothering you.  Explain your situation to the dentist.  Xray's are fast.  If you have an infection and need a root canal, your vacation could turn into a hunt for a dentist there.  An xray may at least be able to see if anything is happening at the tooth root.

Because the pain seems isolated, it does sound as though that tooth may be starting a problem.  

An xray could provide you with some insight as to whether to get that RC and have a great vacation or go and hope for the best.
