Post root canal woes

by elle_dee, Feb 19, 2009 07:54PM
I had a root canal yesterday around noon. We had to schedule the visit last minute, because I was in so much pain from an abscess.
I was prescribed Penicillin VK, and have been taking it, along with Ibuprofen as needed (and it's needed!) to try and manage the pain.
The pain is getting hard to manage at times, though. Sometimes it'll come in waves, and it seems to get worse when I lay down. Also, the swelling doesn't appear to be getting worse, but it feels hard and swollen further down on my jaw than it did before.
Another thing, I can feel the little boil or bump from the abscess on the gums under my tongue. I didn't notice it before, but that was probably because of it's location. I was just wondering if it's normal for it to still be there, because the dentist said that the infection was draining nicely while she was in there. I don't know if the bump from the pus goes away right away, or if it takes a while.
I just want to make sure this goes as smoothly as possible! Thanks for the help :)

Well hope you are doing better..but I can see how what you have wrote makes sense..
First, you had a bad abscess wit lots of pain.. then it is advisable to open clean and if it is draining not to fill .. specially if there is swelling still. Now you are taking A/B and the first thing Pen. will do is to localize the infection, hence feeling it getting harder and more pronounced. The pain unfortunately will continue untill the infection start to breakdown by the A/B which could take 24-30 hours..but again it would have been good to leave the tooth open for more drainage and then fill once the swelling and pain had discipated..
At this point just make sure that you take your Pen exactly on time and keep taking your pain med till it finally takes effect.. all the best

Thank you for your help! I am just being very paranoid right now... I was always afraid of the dentist, and this is my first dental procedure, so I don't know how this all works. Thanks for the answers, though. I feel much better! And yes, I am taking my Pen as directed. I didn't start taking it 'til late last evening, so I'm still waiting for it to really help me out here. Oh well.
Thanks again!
