Protect a broken tooth

I broke my tooth the other day. I'm know i'm going to need a filling/crown to fix it. The problem is, I can't see a dentist until next week and the tooth is getting worse. Another piece has came off since the tooth broke. It was a tiny piece, so I didn't notice until now, but i'm worried that the tooth could get worse, beyond the point where a crown can fix it.

The tooth itself isn't causing any pain. I can drink cold water without any problems. In the meantime, is there anything I can get to protect the tooth until I can get to the dentist. I've been chewing on the other side of my mouth, i've been brushing and flossing regularly and i've been avoiding sugary foods, but that alone hasn't stopped the tooth from getting worse.

Would dental cement work? I've thought about using dental cement, but I don't know if it would work. If it won't, is there anything else that will?

You could try to place a temporary dental filling into the tooth but it would only fill the hole, it may not provide much structural support since its only for a temporary purpose.  The best thing is to avoid any hard foods in general and try to avoid eating on that side.  I would recommend trying to go on a softer diet and cutting up your food if there's anything you feel may be hard.
