Radiating pain after fillings

Four days ago I had three cavities filled (with amalgum), two cavities on the left upper side of my mouth, one on the right upper side (molars).  Had one novocaine shot on each side.  Over the past few days I have had radiating pain on the entire left side of my jaw/mouth (the side where two cavities were filled) and in all the teeth on the left side of my mouth.  Also towards my left ear, and it's causing a headache on that side of my head.  Strangely, I feel the most pain in a bottom tooth, I did not have any work done here.  The dentist said one of the cavities on that side was pretty deep and it was a good thing we took care of it now before it got worse (to, I'm assuming, the point of needing a root canal).  I'm wondering.. is this common, should I be concerned?  Tylenol alleviates the pain fairly well, but when it wears off I can't stand it-- it wakes me up at night.

Just to add some info, I called the dentist and said I was in pain, they didn't even ask me any questions about how much pain I was in, for how long, or what I was doing to alleviate it-- They prescribed me a Medrol Dose Pack, which I have yet to take, because I don't even know if this will help.. Why do they assume it's just inflammation and not an infection or something wrong with the way the filling was put in?  Anyone have any experience with Medrol? Should I take it?
