Red spot with white ring at back of tongue and slightly swollen at right back of throat

by mrstella1979, Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM
Hi,

Hoping that someone may have some advice on this.  About a week ago I started to get a dry throat, it's not severe, and comes and goes throughout the day.  At first I attributed this to my hayfever, as I was sneezing as well.

However, about the same time I noticed a small, almost perfectly circular reddish pink spot at the back right of my tongue, with a white ring around it, and a slightly numb feeling around where the spot is on the tongue.

Also, I have had a little rash under my left armpit for the past couple of weeks, and I noticed spots on my right kneecap.  Within the past couple of days I've began to feel quite run down as well.

Up until very recently I was a smoker, so obviously when I discovered the spot on the tongue I instantly thought oral cancer, even though I'm only 27.  Ive done as thorough an examination on myself as i could and can find nothing else wrong with my tongue.

I've made an appointment with the doctors (closest they could fit me in was monday), but I was just wondering if anyone else has had something like this because I think I'm starting to go out of my head with worry.

It doesn't sound serious but you should be seeing an oral surgeon asap.

To: Thanks
Hi,

Thanks for the quick response, it's relieving to hear that It doesn't sound serious, as I've been getting really worried.

I've still kept up my appointment with the doctor so if they refer me to an ENT specialist then I'll definitely be following it up ASAP.

Oh and you'll be happy to know that this has scared me off smoking for the rest of my life!

Many thanks

Is it possible you're run down? Your immune system is probably lacking.  It could be stress induced (the rash on your torso).

I have been feeling rather run down.  I think it may have something to do with my wisdom tooth on the left bottom.  It grew in weirdly and broke the filling on the molar next to it.

The thing that's really scaring me now is that I noticed a red mark just below the wisdom tooth, and that part of my jaw feels swollen.

Also, the tonsil on the right is swollen and lumpy, but doesn't present any white spots and isn't sore, I just know it's there.

The fact that I have a spot on my tongue at the back right, with a swollen lumpy tonsil next to it, and a red mark next to my wisdom tooth is really beginning to frighten me.

I'm making an appointment with the dentists hopefully for the coming week, im not registered but i think they might fit me in if i explain how worried i am.

Would an infected wisdom tooth cause a swollen tonsil, especially if the tonsil is on the other side of the mouth?

I know i'm at low risk of mouth cancer because of my age, but that doesn't mean that i can't get it, especially seeing i was a smoker for some years.

Please, if anyone has any advice or has experienced anything similar can you tell me?
