Root Canal, calcified, dentist perforated...is this normal or Negligent

I am 36 & was afraid of dentists.  I didn't go for YEARS & ended up with decay in nearly all my teeth.  I found a dentist and have had many crowns and he has, as far as I know, done great work. I went to get 3 teeth on the upper right side crowned.  Not the VERY back molar, but the 3 next it.  He did the crown & put on the temps. During the procedure my teeth were sore which had not happened before. Once I got home the pain didn't go away.  I went & told the dentist & he put the permanent por. crowns on.  A week after that I went back in because they still hurt & he took an xray, said it didn't look like a root canal was necessary, & gave me scripts for antibiotics & steroids.  That took the pain away but once I was off the steriods the pain continued & I was back on the ibuprofin.  I went back in again & he said I'd have to have a root canal.  Once the root canal was over the dentist said, "I did part of your root canal but there was one canal that was calcified.  I tried to get in and ended up perforating, (I am not exactly sure what was perforated) I think the root.  He said that I would probably lose the tooth and have to have a bridge.  Is this negligence or just a normal problem?  He sent me home with antibiotics, the pain is gone.  What should I do?

There is a good chance that you will lose the tooth but I think you should see a specialist(endodontist) because there are times that the perforation can be sealed and you might beable to retain the tooth for an extended period of time. You have nothing to lose in seeking out the consult.Yes you are correct when you say it is the root that is perforated. In looking for the canal the dentist went through the side of the root.Like I said before if the perforation is not too far down it might be able to be saved.
