Salty Taste in Mouth

by Bassetwalker, Mar 29, 2007 12:00AM
I have had a "salty" taste in my mouth that nothing seems to get rid of.  Recently, I had a really bad (putrid) taste that my dentist attributed to a bridge that was loose.  My dentist removed and recemented the bridge, which seemed to eliminate the really bad taste, but not the "salty" taste.  It seems to be coming from the same tooth that had the bad taste.  My dentist declares that it cannot be from this tooth, that the cement has sealed the tooth off. He also could not find any signs of decay. He suggested that I might be dehydrated, which would cause my saliva to be more salty, so I am drinking water all day.  So far, this had not helped.  To me, it feels like something is coming from the tooth which makes me salivate more. What could be causing this?

This is a new one on me.I do not know what may be causing the salty taste but if it continues I would suggest you consult an oral surgeon or an oral pathologist.

Never heard of salty taste from crowns being recemented. There are saliva tests that your dentist can do. It checks pH, level of saliva and flow. If you are low on saliva (xerostomia) I would try Biotene products. They are over the counter.  There are enzymes that can replenish what your body is lacking. I have many patients who are very pleased with these products.

I am also suffering from a permanent salty taste in my mouth , which seems to be coming from the area of my gum where 7 months ago I  had a large crown removed. The area is still tender after all this time although doesn`t appear swollen but I`m convinced it is coming from there. I have been back to my dentist and the doctor who have never heard of this complaint. If it is bacteria that is causing this, would a course of antibiotics clear it up. I am going on holiday next month and would really like to clear it up before I go
