Soft, white patch on gums

Soft, white patch on gums

Over a month ago I cut my lower gum (inside, just below front tooth) and thought nothing of it.  It was slow to heal, mostly, I thought, because I wouldn't let it.  (Apples and other foods that required incisor biting especially irritated it.)  Eventually the pain, never terrible, went away, but I have a large patch of pus covering the spot (much like the pus that collects on the tonsils during strep throat).  I can drain the patch with no pain and no bleeding, but it regrows over a period of days.  I have no other bleeding of my gums and neither smoke nor drink.  I am away from home for a month or so and cannot get to my dentist but want reassurance that this is not an urgent matter.

I would suggest just keeping your mouth clean - listerine or scope - acidic foods would likely burn or not feel too nice until it clears.
